Young oaks in town, old oaks on acreage

Tree Trimming in Fulshear, TX

Fulshear has two kinds of trees: saplings in new front yards and big oaks and pecans on older land. They are pruned differently, and we do both.

Most trimming calls in Fulshear come from one of two places. In the new communities along FM 359 and FM 1093, builder-planted live oaks need shaping while they are small. On the older homesteads, acreage and creek-bottom lots, mature oaks and pecans need deadwood out and weight off long limbs.

Tree King is owned by Lucas, an ISA Certified Arborist, and based a few miles north in Pattison. We make proper pruning cuts, never top a tree, and never use climbing spikes on a tree that is staying.

How we approach a tree in Fulshear

Young live oaks. Small cuts, made early. We choose a single leader, shorten the stems competing with it and raise the lowest limbs in stages over several years. A tree pruned this way needs very little for the rest of its life.

Mature live oaks. We take out dead and hanging wood, clear the roof and thin only where limbs cross or crowd. A live oak should not be stripped out in the middle, which is called lion-tailing and leaves the ends heavy and prone to break.

Pecans. Pecan wood is brittle and the limbs grow long. Shortening the heaviest ones back to a strong side branch is the best protection against the sudden limb drop pecans are known for.

Timing. Oaks are best pruned from July through January, outside the February to June window when oak wilt spreads. Dead or dangerous limbs come off whenever they are found, and fresh oak cuts get sealed.

Where we trim in Fulshear

We work all over Fulshear: Cross Creek Ranch, Cross Creek West, Fulshear Lakes, Polo Ranch, Fulbrook on Fulshear Creek, Jordan Ranch, Tamarron and Tamarron West, downtown Fulshear and the acreage properties around it.

In the new neighborhoods, the trees on a street are usually the same age. If a few neighbors book together we can prune them all in one visit.

Frequently asked questions

How much of a tree can be trimmed at once?

As a rule no more than about a quarter of the live canopy in one year, and usually much less. A young tree being trained needs only a few cuts.

When is the best time to trim oak trees in Fulshear?

July through January. We avoid February through June when we can because that is when oak wilt spreads most easily, and we seal fresh cuts on oaks year round.

Do you top trees?

No. Topping ruins a tree’s structure and brings on weak, fast regrowth. If a tree is too tall for where it stands we reduce it properly or talk with you about removal.
