Our specialty, in our busiest neighborhood
The big live oaks are what make Weston Lakes. Pruned well they last for generations. Pruned badly they never recover.
Weston Lakes has some of the finest mature live oaks and pecans west of Houston, on golf-course lots, along the lakes and down toward the Brazos. Many stand directly over homes, driveways and fairways.
Structural pruning of big live oaks and pecans is what Tree King’s owner Lucas has specialized in for most of his 30-plus years in the trade. He is an ISA Certified Arborist, and Weston Lakes is one of the places we work most. We are based a short drive north in Pattison.

Take out what is dead first. Deadwood is what falls. Removing it is the safest and most useful thing that can be done for an old tree, and it takes no live growth from it.
Keep the inside of the canopy. Stripping the interior limbs and leaving foliage only at the tips makes a tree look tidy for a season and weak for years. We leave interior growth, which is what keeps limbs strong and tapered.
Shorten, do not remove. A limb that reaches too far over the roof can usually be reduced to a side branch instead of being cut off at the trunk. Smaller wounds close faster and the tree keeps its shape.
Mind the season. We prune oaks from July through January when we can, outside the February to June oak wilt window, and seal every fresh cut. Storm damage and hazards are handled whenever they happen.
We prune throughout Weston Lakes: golf-course lots, lake and river lots and the wooded streets in between. We are used to the gate, the cart paths and keeping the street clear while we work.
Because we are in the community so often, it is easy to stop and look at a tree. If you are not sure whether yours needs work, call and we will tell you honestly.
Every three to five years is typical for a healthy tree, mainly for deadwood and clearance. A live oak should not need heavy thinning.
We avoid February through June when we can because that is when oak wilt spreads most easily. If a limb must come off in spring, the cut is sealed right away.
Yes. Pecans drop large limbs without warning, so reducing weight on long limbs is the main work, ideally before the nut crop and storm season.
