Oaks over roofs, sidewalks and streets
Katy’s neighborhood oaks were planted close to houses and have grown into them. Good pruning gives the house room without wrecking the tree.
The most common trimming job in Katy is a live oak that was planted fifteen to thirty years ago, a few steps from the house, and now rests on the roof and hangs low over the sidewalk and street. The second most common is a younger oak in a newer community that needs its structure set before it gets there.
Tree King is based in Pattison, a short drive northwest of Katy, and is owned by Lucas, an ISA Certified Arborist. We make proper cuts back to a side branch or the trunk, which is what keeps a tree from sprouting back thicker than before.

Limbs on the roof. Branches that rub shingles wear through them and give squirrels and rats a way in. We clear them back several feet so the tree has room to grow before it needs attention again.
Low limbs over the walk and street. Most Katy HOAs expect sidewalks and streets to be kept clear, and delivery trucks break what hangs too low. We raise the canopy evenly, keeping enough lower limbs to hold the trunk’s strength.
Trees that were topped or lion-tailed. We see many oaks that were cut badly by a crew working door to door. They can usually be brought back over a few prunings by choosing the best regrowth and removing the rest.
Two trees in each other’s way. Front-yard oaks on neighboring lots grow into each other. Pruning both sides together gives a better result than each owner cutting back their half.
We trim trees throughout Katy: Cinco Ranch, Firethorne, Cane Island, Tamarron, Old Katy and the neighborhoods between I-10 and FM 1093.
We work within HOA guidelines and can time oak pruning for the cooler months when the risk of oak wilt is lowest.
We like to leave several feet of clearance so limbs do not touch in wind and the tree has room to grow before the next pruning.
A healthy mature live oak needs attention every three to five years, mostly for deadwood and clearance. Young trees being trained need a light pruning every two to three years.
We can trim what hangs over your side. For anything beyond that, it is best to talk with your neighbor first.
