On acreage, a few trees matter more than the rest: the ones over the house, the barn, the driveway and the fence. Those are worth a look once a year. Check for dead limbs over anything you care about, mushrooms or conks at the base, new cracks where big limbs join the trunk, and soil lifting on one side of a leaning tree.
Live oaks growing in a group, called a motte, share connected roots. That is good for stability, but it also means oak wilt can move from tree to tree underground, so timing and clean work matter. We avoid routine oak pruning from February through June and paint every oak cut. See the best time to trim oak trees in Texas and signs your tree is dying.
Not sure about a tree? A tree health diagnostic gives you a straight answer on whether it can be treated or should come down.

Pecans can be pruned most of the year, with late winter the easiest time to see the structure. For live oaks the safest window is roughly July through January, because oak wilt spreads most from February through June. Dangerous limbs should come down whenever they are found.
